White Horehound (Marrubium Vulgare)
The cough herb — the oldest known cough remedy in Western medicine, expectorant and bronchial-clearing from the bitterest of the mint family herbs.
White horehound (Marrubium vulgare) has been used as a cough and respiratory remedy since ancient Egypt — it is referenced in the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BC) and was a staple of Roman, Greek, and medieval European medicine for chest complaints. Its bitter compound marrubiin is a direct expectorant, thinning and loosening mucus in the bronchial passages while relaxing bronchial spasm. Approved by German Commission E for coughs and upper respiratory catarrh, horehound was the original ingredient of traditional horehound candy — a confectionery remedy for coughs sold in Britain and America for centuries.
